Summer’s Not Over Yet — Here’s How We’re Stretching It

Labor Day passed, the kids are back in school, and everyone’s suddenly talking pumpkin spice like July didn’t happen last week. But look outside — the light’s still long some days, the patio’s still warm most afternoons, and there’s a real stretch of September where summer just hasn’t gotten the memo that it’s supposed to be done.

We’re not ready to let it go yet either.

Here’s how we’re squeezing out what’s left of it.

The calendar says fall. Your porch doesn’t have to agree. There’s a specific kind of September evening — warm enough for bare feet, cool enough to actually enjoy sitting outside — that might honestly be better than most of July. No mosquitoes chasing you in, no heat that makes you want to be anywhere with air conditioning. Just the good part of summer, without the part that made you retreat indoors by 2pm.

This is peak Tea and Seltzer season, not the tail end of it. Peach Tea, Berry Tea, Lemonade Iced Tea, Lime Seltzer, Black Cherry Seltzer — these were built for exactly this stretch. Cold, light, real tea or glacial water, nothing heavy. If you’ve been saving them for “real summer,” don’t. Late-September light hits a patio just as well as June light did, and there’s something almost better about a cold can when you know the season’s numbered.

Do the thing you kept meaning to do in July. Every summer has that list — the lake day that never happened, the friend you kept saying “let’s get together before it gets cold,” the patio you meant to actually sit on instead of just walking past. September’s grace period is exactly the time to make good on it, before the light drops and the whole mood of the season shifts. A cooler of Seltzers and an actual afternoon with the people you’ve been meaning to see — that’s the whole assignment.

Let the evenings start doing double duty. As the days shorten just slightly, you get the rare stretch where an afternoon can still feel like summer and the evening can already feel like the beginning of something slower. A Relax Tonic as the sun starts dropping is a nice preview of what fall evenings are about to become — without fully letting go of the season that’s still, technically, holding on.

There’s no rule that says you have to switch over on a specific date. Pumpkin spice shows up in stores before Labor Day every year, and every year it’s premature. Let the weather actually decide when summer’s done, not the marketing calendar. If it’s warm enough for a porch and a cold can, it’s still summer — regardless of what month the sign at the coffee shop says.

So: one more lake trip if you can swing it. One more evening on the porch that doesn’t require a jacket. A cooler of Teas and Seltzers that isn’t rationed like it’s the last of something, because it’s not — not yet.

Fall will get here on its own schedule.

No need to rush it.

Mindfully Crafted. Highly Effective.
