THC is the primary psychoactive compound that the plant produces. It is not yet known how the cannabis plant managed to so perfectly mimic and exploit our internal chemistry. Some researchers refer to the synergy between humans and THC as a “happy accident” (with an emphasis on “happy”).
Scientists already know why THC works so well on humans and that’s because of its similarity in structure to one of our internally-produced endocannabinoids, known as anandamide. Anandamide is often called the “bliss molecule” and years of research have shown that it plays a major role in many human functions– coordination and movement, mood, hunger, sleep, pleasure, and of course, memory. Being that THC exploits the same endocannabinoid receptor pathways, it exerts its effects on those same functions within us.
